city of culture bid

6/14/2017

So we have been successful with our city of culture bid for Paisley. We have been funded to run a three part project. The first part will be to research where our deaf communities are in Renfrewshire and engage with them finding out what they would like to see more of culturally. The second is to work with a Primary school in Renfrewshire, teaching them basic British Sign Language Skills, alongside preparing, rehearsing and performing in Paisley arts centre with deaf and hearing actors based around the concept of communication. The third stage is to meet up with industry leaders within the deaf arts to find out what they do and how it works and is supported and to find out how to bring their expertise to the Renfrewshire area

upcoming production - 'communication'

I would like to invite you all to Historical Adventures Production of “Communication”. I have been working with St. Catherine’s Primary school for the past 8 weeks teaching them basic British Sign Language and working on a performance based on communication. The children have created the ideas and devised the performance piece.
There is an island where the people are split by communication problems and they just can’t see to get along. One day, something happens and the other half of the island need to learn to communicate again. Will our other islanders help them out?
The layout of the night will be a short film, followed by a short performance and ending with the children teaching our audience what they have learned about British Sign Language in an interactive presentation.

There will be two performances of the show at the Paisley Arts Centre in New Street in Paisley on Wednesday the 21st of June. There will be a 1:00 p.m. showing and a 7:00 p.m. showing. The performances will last approximately 1 hour and the tickets for it are free (you will still need to book a ticket to attend). If you are interested in attending, the Paisley Arts Centre box office number is 0300 300 1210.
Alternatively, you can contact me at david.ororke@historical-adventures.co.uk or text me on 07812437559. Just let me know your name, phone number, how may tickets you would like and whether it’s the 1:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. performance you would like to come along to. There will be numerous signers of level 3 and above on the night and there will also be an interpreter present

Winter update

Well it has been a fantastically busy and wonderful year at Historical Adventures Theatre Company. In November we celebrated our 10th birthday. It is a huge achievement that is down to all the friends of the company and the wonderfully talented staff that we have with us on this Historical Adventure. We have collaborated with some great councils and some great companies to bring us to where we are. Most importantly we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for all our participants. To you all I am eternally grateful.
We have been working hard with our Youth Theatre at the Harbour art centre and afterschool drama clubs to develop their skills, abilities and confidence with some great and entertaining results. Our Holiday Programmes and event days have been a great success and have had us travelling far and wide throughout North Ayrshire, meeting all kinds of lovely people.
Also we have been working with enable Renfrew, Milldale and the Mirren this year. It has been an amazing experience with those groups and they all seem to be flourishing under John’s careful guidance. Their Christmas shows are the best I have seen.
David is now sitting his level 6 British Sign Language course and is loving being involved with working with the drama class over at the Hayfield Support centre for the deaf, teaching them many skills including puppetry, circus skills and improvisation and scene work. He is vastly enjoying his transition to the deaf arts.
There are grand plans for historical Adventures in the year to come including a Tam O Shanter tour that starts late January. There is also a chance of working alongside Weaving Musical Threads and Moxie creative Kids which is always filled with fun and creativeness. As usual all our classes will be starting back in the second week of January.
We have also applied for funding to be involved in the Paisley 2021 city of culture bid, so everyone cross your fingers for some good news. If we are successful then there will be a whole host of deaf events coming to Renfrewshire.
All the best for 2017

It's been a busy old time for the Historical Adventures team this summer

David has been working down at the Harbour Arts Centre doing their school holiday programme. The productions have been Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Twits, Matilda the Musical and we are now working on Romeo V's Juliet which is a modern twist on the classic. Also he has been involved in the lunchtime club Drama sessions. Last week David attended an activity day for the Hayfield support services for the deaf teaching circus skills and puppet skills with our very own signing puppet Freddy

John has been very busy teaching drama to the group users of Milldale special needs group. He has been teaching them all elements of drama and is having an amazing time with them. John is also involved in the lunchtime clubs in North Ayrshire and has visited lots of new schools.

Celebrate world puppet day 21st march 2016

3/21/2016

World Puppetry Day celebrates an art form that is as old as the beginning of humankind and is just as relevant today. Every culture has their own history and one is encouraged to borrow freely from each other. The heart of puppetry is a grand and glorious tradition that includes all, transcends languages, and unites the world in a way that is truly unique and powerful.
Meet Historical Adventures puppet Jack. He is cheeky and charming and looks forward to meeting each and every one of you!

Our Youth Theatre Groups have been highly successful, and have put on various performances such as our own adaption of ‘Tam O’Shanter’. Not only do our classes offer the chance for children and teenagers to perform plays and pantomimes, our classes also help them to gain confidence, finding where their own talents lie and helping them shine as individuals while utilising those talents to work as part of a team.  Our classes also aim to help teach our members improvisation skills, allowing them to think on their feet and to help them become more creative in how they think. Finally, our classes aim to teach our members the art and discipline of stage craft and acting, having a lot of fun as we do so! If you are interested in booking in a Tam O'Shanter performance and classes for your school please contact e: info@historical-adventures.co.uk or t: 07812437559
